As a fan of the old-style light guns on PlayStation and in the arcade, I was pleasantly surprised to see these games playable on their own system. G’aim’e Light Guns bring the arcade back to the living room, and it’s been a bundle of fun for my friends and me.

G’aim’e was nice enough to send out the Ultimate edition of the console and Light guns. Opening the package was quick, and the setup was super easy. In the box were two Blue and orange Light guns, one foot pedal, the TV Box, a power brick, a USB cable, an HDMI Cable and a quick start guide. These main components were accompanied by some bonus items, which were a badge and a diorama stand celebrating 30 years since the release of Time Crisis.

These new-style guns use updated technology to function with LCD screens; this technology utilises AI and software to compensate for the updated screen stylings without the need for additional sensors or adapters. Simply run through the game’s calibration settings when the box is turned on, and it is good to go. This calibration can be redone at any time, meaning that swapping out controls to another player isn’t detrimental to their enjoyment.

The gun is comfortable to use, with the cable not weighing on the handle and a massive four-metre reach, which meant I could comfortably shoot from the couch or stand further back. It was also easy for my friend’s child to use with their smaller hands. The gun is lightweight and has a series of buttons on it. These buttons range from the a and b on either side, as well as a coin button and the trigger.

There is also a rumble switch that can be turned on and off. The front of the gun has a sensor on the end of the barrel that is used to sight the screen and allows the gun to work. For Time Crisis, there is an included pedal; this pedal works just like in the arcade, and stepping on it allowed me to pull out and into cover for reloading and was duplicated on the gun with the A or B button. The pedal allowed for hands-free action and was great when playing standing up.

The TV box is how the game runs; no additional consoles or computers needed. The small box is only 265g and smaller than any other home console I have seen. It powers with the included cable and charger and was very easy to plug into the TV. It features two USB-C ports on the front, as well as a power and a reset button. The rear has an HDMI out and a USB-C Power in. Within minutes of unpacking, I had the system up and running and was ready to play a round or two of Time Crisis. When playing Time Crisis, the pedal and one gun take up the two USB-C slots on the front, while playing multiplayer games such as Point Blank or Steel Gunner 1 or 2, the two slots are taken up with the light guns. The edition I received was the English Ultimate pack, and it came with four games, three of which are two-player compatible.

The games are as follows:

Time Crisis (1 Player) – Dive back into the thrilling world of espionage as Richard Miller, the legendary secret agent known for his unmatched speed and incredible marksmanship! Time is running out as you race to rescue Rachel MacPherson from a ruthless tyrant intent on reclaiming control over their nation.

POINT BLANK (2 Player) – Join Dr Don and Dr Dan in POINT BLANK – an exhilarating and zany shooting game like no other! Dive into a vibrant world filled with hundreds of unique galleries, each offering a variety of thrilling challenges. With thousands of different targets to aim at, you will have the opportunity to blast away at everything from snapping piranhas and adorable fluffy ducks to elusive falling bottles. Test your reflexes and precision as you navigate through these fast-paced scenarios, where quick thinking and sharp aim will earn you high scores. Get ready for an action-packed experience that guarantees endless fun!

STEEL GUNNER 1 & 2 (2 Player) – STEEL GUNNER and STEEL GUNNER 2 are fast-paced arcade light gun shooters developed by Namco. In these games, players take on the roles of elite police officers Garcia and Cliff. Equipped with powerful exosuits, they fight against waves of terrorists, cyborgs, and robotic enemies that threaten Neo Arc City. The series features destructible environments, civilian rescue mechanics, and explosive action set in both urban and sci-fi landscapes. The STEEL GUNNER series offers classic, adrenaline-fueled arcade shooting with a heroic twist.

I have had a few sessions with the gun, and the tracking is very efficient. There is also an option in the settings to display an on-screen cursor, making targeting that little bit easier. Each of the games also comes with a difficulty option. I mainly played on the medium setting, but there are easy and hard settings depending on preference. The game was very enjoyable when playing with my friend and his son, taking turns. Point Blank was easily a favourite for us all.

Overall, my experience with the guns and the game has been exceptionally positive. Setting everything up was straightforward, making it easy to transport, which is a huge plus for playing in different locations. The game adapted seamlessly to various screen sizes, ensuring that wherever I played, the visuals remained sharp and engaging.

Playing with friends brought an extra level of enjoyment; we all had a blast with Point Blank. It struck a perfect balance between challenge and fun, keeping us engaged as we competed against each other. This game will be a staple for our hangouts, as it fosters friendly rivalry and laughter.

Moreover, there’s a significant wave of nostalgia that comes with it. The guns not only look authentic but also feel great in hand, making the gameplay immersive. Their weight and response add to the overall experience, reminding me of classic arcade days. The combination of enjoyable gameplay and nostalgic elements makes this game a cherished choice for my gatherings with friends.
