Huedini mixes action roguelikes with a colour-matching game, and you’ll need to be able to think fast and keep on your toes as those elements combine.

Playing as the titular Huedini, you can switch between three colours, red, green and blue. And as the very early levels introduce, you’ll need to switch between the colours to hit a crystal a couple of times to make it to the next level. However, each time you hit it, some enemies spawn. These enemies can be of multiple colours as well, so you’re having to make sure you’re matching the colour of the enemy when you run into them to hurt them, or they’ll hurt you.

The first few levels of the demo are simple enough, as switching between the three colours and running into and attacking the enemies is easy enough to keep your head around. When the game starts adding things like coloured lasers, you’ll also need to switch between colours to match and stay safe. It can quickly make you tense up and want to lock in as much as possible.

Play

As more enemies begin to appear, you’ll be thankful that at the end of each level, you’re awarded an upgrade and the option to pick from one of three upgrades to add to Huedini. These can be spitting fire in certain colour forms, or a tentacle that begins swinging around wildly, attacking enemies in another form. Mixing and matching the right upgrades, while also ensuring that none of the three colour forms is left feeling significantly weaker, was an essential part of the game.

I really enjoyed the look, music, and intriguing yet straightforward take on the roguelike genre with Huedini. You can check out a demo for the game yourself on Steam if you’d like to do so. There’s currently no release date for this game.
