After Final Fantasy VII Remake lived up to the many years of built-up anticipation, fans are hoping that 4 year wait for the next entry in this reimagined series will hit the same way. Easily one of the most anticipated games of the year, the expectations for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from Square Enix are sky-high.

Picking up after the events of Remake, Cloud and the rest of our heroes find themselves chasing Sephiroth across the continent in order to stop his world-ending plan. On the way, they’ll meet new companions, make new enemies and deal with Shinra Company agents.

The Koalaty Critics found Rebirth a worthy successor to Remake and a strong middle chapter for a planned trilogy, a task that has been proven in all mediums to be fraught with danger. The Critics were impressed by the more open-world sections compared to the first game’s more linear approach and the opportunity to form deeper connections with the rest of your party. The introduction of Synergy Skills adds an extra layer of strategy to the combat from Rebirth and the Queen’s Blood card game sounds like it will be a serious threat to people’s time. There was some criticism of some dated elements of the world world design and traversal while a couple of critics mentioned the conclusion of the game may be divisive.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is launching exclusively on PS5 on Thursday 29th of February.

KOALATY CRITICS – AUSTRALIAN CRITICS

Here’s what Australian critics are saying about the game.

Checkpoint Gaming – 9.5/10 (Charlie Kelly)

“There have been moments in this game where I’ve literally cheered alongside this cast I’ve come to know as my friends and sobbed at some of the tragedy found within. I’m going to be a bit hyperbolic here but the game has earned it: it has had me constantly thinking about it and has rewired my brain chemistry. I cannot bloody wait for other people to experience this game because they’re in for an incredible ride.”

Games Crater – 8/10 (Nick Baker)

“Surprisingly, I found Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s story both exciting and boring. While the earlier chapters were engaging, much of the middle of the game felt like it existed to fill time. While I appreciate these middle chapters were likely designed to help develop the bonds between the cast of characters, I often found that the character development wasn’t quite as attention-grabbing as the original story.”

GamesHub – 5/5 (Leah J. Williams)

“That’s what a good game does. It makes you feel. It makes you think. With grand set pieces and rich narrative turning points, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth consistently gives you reasons to care, to sit at the edge of your seat, wide-eyed, wondering what the future holds. Even with the groundwork laid by the original game, there is a sense that anything can happen, that the future remains unwritten. “

Kotaku AU – Unscored (Emily Spindler)

“Rebirth takes the core DNA of the original and reforges it for a modern iteration of the RPG genre. Story beats and pacing are tweaked here and there – understandably, given the original has been cut into three separate games for the project – but it retains the same charm, heart, and overall message . “

Maxi-Geek – 9.5/10 (Aaron Ducret)

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is massive game. A story experience alone that spans upwards of thirty hours, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks at what the first game was able to achieve, laughs and sneezes in its face. A pseudo-open world (more akin to large explorable zones), an unbelievable number of mini-games, side quests and environmental features to explore, as well as hundred of different encounters, brand new and unique bosses, and an array of new weapons to use. Rebirth is more than just a run-of-the-mill sequel to Remake.”

Player2 – A- (Stephen del Prado)

“Thematically, Rebirth continues to examine the nature of memory, legacy and fate with added metatextuality as it meshes slavish adherence to the original with new aspects, sometimes so subtly the player will struggle to separate long-term memory from current actuality – ‘’Is this how this happened? Maybe I don’t quite remember it correctly…”.”

PowerUp Gaming – 9/10 (Adam Mathew)

“If Final Fantasy VII Remake was a bold statement of intent, then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the first half of a promise on track to being kept. Its world scope and strategic complexity are beyond my expectations. It’s also a near-perfect blend of game design modernity and original article reverence, though I suspect some folks will not appreciate the cryptic nature of its conclusion. I did.”

Press Start – 9/10 (Harry Kalogirou)

“Sephiroth takes centre stage in Rebirth, brought to life in scene-stealing fashion by Tyler Hoechlin’s excellent performance. Sephiroth feels like a real threat in Rebirth – always one step ahead, always aware and ready for what’s next, as he strings the party along like an elusive puppet master.”
