M3GAN 2.0 announced for an early 2025 cinema release

M3GAN has been a mega-hit around the globe, making $95 million worldwide so far and on its way to hitting $100 million before leaving. Coming off a $12 million budget, the horror flick was bound to get a sequel, and this morning Universal Pictures confirmed that M3GAN 2.0 will arrive in cinemas on January 17th, 2025.

Akela Cooper, who wrote the first film, will pen the script for the sequel and stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are on board to return for M3GAN 2.0. 

SPOILERS FOR M3GAN BELOW

The first film ended with Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) surviving an attack from M3GAN (Jenna Davis), who thought she was doing what was best for Cady. However, as the two walked out of Gemma’s house at the end of the film, the camera lingered on one of Gemma’s smart speakers, which had gone dead prior to the attack, implying that M3GAN may have uploaded her AI into the system. 

There is also a loose thread of Davids’s (Ronny Chieng) assistant Kurt (Stephane Garneau-Monten) stealing the plans and data for M3GAN earlier in the film, implying he was going to sell them off to a competitor in the toy market. 

The sequel could head into both of these directions to explain how M3GAN gets back in the market, especially since the film is titled ‘2.0’, implying it is a new and improved version. Maybe by a different toy company.
