Early this morning, developer Firaxis released a first look at the gameplay for Marvel’s Midnight Suns ahead of its March 2022 release.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns uses a card-based battle system
As a studio known for the XCOM games, the gameplay may surprise, as it’s not simple “Marvel’s XCOM,” as I know many were hoping it to be. Instead, the game uses a card system that lets you cast and use specific abilities in battle.
During battles, you’ll control a squad of three heroes, one of which will always be ‘The Hunter,’ a brand new superhero invented for the game. You’re dealt a random hand of cards/abilities for each character to use. There’s a range, close combat, finishing, and team-up moves.
The gameplay was explained in deeper detail in the extended gameplay walkthrough trailer below, along with some story details.
Between missions, you can wander ‘The Abbey’ as The Hunter and interact with the superhero cast. There’s also secrets to be found and side activities you can take part in, alongside training moments and moments that let you increase your bond with other superheroes. From The Abbey, you’ll also upgrade your cards, select your squad and head out on missions when you’re ready for another.
What do you think of the gameplay reveal for Marvel’s Midnight Suns? Does the card-based battle system work for you? Or were you hoping for something closer to the XCOM franchise? Let me know in the comment section.
