Last night, I downloaded the newly added PS2 classics as part of PlayStation Plus Deluxe and wondered if they’d receive the same treatment as the PS1 and PSP classics. This would include save states, different visual filters/styles, and the ability to rewind gameplay and trophies for first-party games. Surprisingly, I got more than I bargained for!

All three of the PS2 classics have all the gameplay features the PS1/PSP classics have had, which means you can cheese your way through some places with saves states or even just rewind if you die or mess something up. And Sly Cooper has a trophy list, which isn’t surprising. It’s different from the one included with the remaster but fairly similar. What was very surprising was that Tomb Raider Legacy and Star Wars: The Clone Wars also have platinum trophy lists. It was not something I was expecting, as third-party games hadn’t been getting trophy support for PS1/PSP.

Well, they hadn’t been until now as a quick look on PSN Profiles spotted updates to Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to The Rescue, Toy Story 3, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, and Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus — all now sporting trophy lists.

Apparently, the trophies for these classics have to be triggered by visual or audio moments in the games due to coding integration for when to pop a trophy not being a thing back when these games were released. And maybe Sony has been able to organise and get permission to add these triggers into the games? I doubt that each publisher is putting any effort into adding them to PS1/PS2/PSP digital library releases.

It’ll be interesting to see if the next batch of classics added all have trophies at launch now.
