Sony has announced that it will cease all physical game discs as of 2028.
In a news post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony announced that it will end production of “physical discs for new games on PlayStation consoles” in January 2028. A move sure to draw many disappointed looks and reactions.
This is a move that someone was going to make eventually, but Sony has decided to be the first out of the gate. The writing has been on the wall for some time now, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Xbox have their own games to stop production of physical discs for its games – although the backlash Sony will cop for this one for some time might make Microsoft and Xbox hold off on any plans to share that news.
Sid Shuman, Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said:
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
Sony hasn’t shared any data to back up this apparent claim about how the “community prefers to access and play games today,” but I’m sure it would have to be enough on their end to justify making the move now.
Let’s also remember that the latest PlayStation console, the PlayStation 5 Pro, doesn’t even have a disc drive unless you purchase it separately and attach it yourself.
So what do you think of this news? Is it a disappointing middle finger to game collectors and video game preservation, or something you’re okay with because you buy digitally anyway? Let me know in the comment section below.
