Studio Ghibli has announced that the long-awaited next film from Hayao Miyazaki will release in Japan on July 14th, 2022.

It’ll be exactly ten years since Miyazaki’s last film (and, at the time, his retirement picture), The Wind Rises, which was released in 2013. That film was focused on WWII and, in particular, the planes of the time, which Miyazaki is fascinated with.

His new film, tentatively titled ‘How Do You Live?’ is based upon, or at least inspired by, the book of the same name by author Yoshino Genzaburō.

The Goodreads description for the book is below:

“How Do You Live? is narrated in two voices. The first belongs to Copper, fifteen, who after the death of his father must confront inevitable and enormous change, including his own betrayal of his best friend. In between episodes of Copper’s emerging story, his uncle writes to him in a journal, sharing knowledge and offering advice on life’s big questions as Copper begins to encounter them. Over the course of the story, Copper, like his namesake Copernicus, looks to the stars, and uses his discoveries about the heavens, earth, and human nature to answer the question of how he will live.”

I hope we receive news of if the film will receive an international release simultaneously, but we’ll have to wait and see for now.
