UPDATE:
It has now been revealed that the project is a short film called “Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies” made in collaboration with Studio Ghibli for the three-year anniversary of The Mandalorian. Directed by Katsuya Kondo and featuring music by The Mandalorian‘s composer Ludwig Göransson, the short film is streaming on Disney+ from the 13th of November 2022.

ORIGINAL STORY:
This morning Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli posted a short 15-second teaser with the LucasFilm logo, followed by their own, and it sent fans of both companies into a frenzy.

What this is teasing could be a number of things. Of course, the presumptuous are jumping to Studio Ghibli working on some form of Star Wars animated project, maybe for Disney+. But it’s easy sometimes to forget that Lucasfilm produces more than just Star Wars projects. They currently have the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film in post-production, and the Willow series on Disney+ is releasing this month. Back in the heyday, Lucasfilm also produced things like The Land Before Time and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. All of this is to say: maybe Lucasfilm is producing a live-action version of a Studio Ghibli film.

Also, yes, in this world of Twitter I did check if it was the real account.

It’s a long shot, and I can’t imagine a world where Hayao Miyazaki was comfortable with one of his films being remade into a live-action production, but there are weirder things that have happened. The Disney partnership is already in place, where Disney is the publisher of Studio Ghibli films in the West to think about as well.

Let me know what you think in the comment section below, and stay tuned for what this pans out to be.
