Sydney’s games industry is getting one of its biggest stages yet, with Waypoint Constellations set to take over the Sydney Opera House later this year.
Constellations began in 2024 as a small community event in an Alexandria café before moving to Oxford Art Factory in 2025. This year’s move to the Sydney Opera House represents its biggest leap yet and reflects the continued growth of Sydney’s game development scene.
Rather than functioning as a traditional games showcase, Constellations focuses on the people behind locally developed games. Throughout the evening, developers will share stories about their work. At the same time, attendees can play a curated selection of games from Sydney and New South Wales studios alongside behind-the-scenes displays documenting their development. The event will conclude with music, DJs and drinks in the Opera House’s Western Foyers.
“Hosting Constellations at the Sydney Opera House is a wonderful opportunity for the local game development community,” said Waypoint co-directors Ryan Penning and Liezl Ronquillo.
“We believe games and their developers deserve a showing of this stature and given the same breadth of admiration and importance in a venue as culturally beloved as the Sydney Opera House.”
Sydney Opera House Head of Screen Stuart Buchanan said the venue was proud to recognize games alongside other artistic mediums.
“The Sydney Opera House has always been a place of creativity, community, and storytelling. We are proud to celebrate games as a contemporary art form and to enable artists, creators, and their audiences to explore innovative, interactive forms of creative expression.”
Featured games and additional announcements, including music performances, will be revealed over the coming weeks.
Presented by Waypoint and Serenade with support from Screen NSW, the annual event will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Tickets are on sale through the Sydney Opera House website.
