The Terastal phenomenon is the fundamental gimmick/mechanic being introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet. Unlike Gigaxmaxing seen in Pokemon Sword/Shield, however, Tera Pokemon sounds like it has the ability to be a game changer and add a competitive element that fans will love.
I’m sure we’ll learn more about the story reason for the Terastal phenomenon in the game. Still, for gameplay reasons, as explained on the Pokemon website, select Trainers in the Paldea region can throw a Tera Orb at Pokemon and cause a Terallization. These Orbs use all of their energy once used, which you can recharge either at Pokemon Centers or by finding a crystal in the wild with Terastal energy.
Every Pokemon in the Paldea region can Terastallize, although some are rarer and more powerful than others. All Pokemon have a Tera Type, which will typically match its primary type, though it can be something else in rare occurrences.
An Eevee can be a Normal Tera Type, while other Eevee could be a Flying, Wate or Fire Tera Type. All up, there are 18 different Tera types to match the number of Pokemon typings, meaning you can get some combinations of Pokemon typings after Terastallizing a super-rare Pokemon.
Choosing to Terastallize a Pokemon during a battle may be to super-power its base typing to defeat an opponent even faster, but Trainers could also use it for defensive purposes to gain a typing in their Pokemons Terastalizzed form to protect it.
Tera Pokemon hunting will be a big thing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and I can’t wait to see how the competitive scene reacts to this mechanic.
But what do you think? Let me know in the comment section below.
