Some of the most fun you can have in a cinema is always with a big-budget action film, and 2024 delivered. Only one of the films on our list did not make it to the big screen, although we’d sure liked to have watched it on a larger screen.
Here are our picks for the five best action films released in 2024.
5.) Twisters

It isn’t surprising that they made a sequel to Twister given the glut of legacy sequels we are bombarded with at the moment. What is surprising is how good this turned out. Striking a more serious tone than the 1996 film, Twisters uses its fantastic cast to great effect and delivers a fun adventure and romance. But it is the twister sequences that make this film memorable and showcases the advancement filmmaking has made in the last 25+ years.

4.) The Fall Guy

It is a surprisingly fun and amazing tribute to stuntmen and women on the silver screen. This movie has quickly become a favourite of mine, and it had me laughing, crying, and falling in love with the cast throughout the film. A plot consisting of conspiracy, love, heartbreak, betrayal, and plenty of action. The stars, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, as well as all the crew, seem to be having a great time. This movie had me grinning after the first time I saw it at the cinema and every time I’ve seen it since.

3.) Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Somehow, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga didn’t perform as well as Fury Road. It’s technically a sensational film by George Miller, who continues to deliver these highly technical and loud action films even into his later years. As a prequel to Fury Road, the film only adds and makes that film better, as Anya Taylor-Joy brings Furiosa to life in all new-exhilarating ways, and the Wasteland builds upon its character with a fulfilling new map being drawn of its locations.

2.) Monkey Man

In his directorial debut, Dev Patel proves himself to be a star behind and in front of the camera in a genre he may have lots of love for but isn’t known for. In this revenge thriller, he doesn’t fall into any stereotypical trappings and instead makes a film imbued with Indian culture, badass fight-and-chase sequences, and a showdown with a killer soundtrack.

1.) Rebel Ridge

A massive surprise, this Netflix film from the director Green Room is such a clever and well-made film that has surely made Aaron Pierre a name to watch out for. Pierre gives a star-making performance as the methodical Terry who is at odds with a small town’s corrupt police force led by a fantastic Don Johnson. A brilliantly crafted story and shot and executed to perfection.
