We love talking about trailers on our film and TV podcast, What Do You Wanna Watch? And on that show, we rate trailers with a thumbs up or down system, and you can be sure every trailer on this list has a guaranteed double thumbs up.
Here are our picks for the best movie trailers released in 2024.
5.) The Substance
“Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?” Pair that line with the banging original soundtrack, the Dennis Quad shrimp eating, and there’s one hell of a way to introduce a movie to a new audience. With a tease of something more sinister at every corner of the screen, the moment you watched the trailer for The Substance, you probably knew if you wanted to watch it or not, but you knew there was something special here either way.

4.) Mickey 17
There was a fair bit of concern about Bong Joon-ho‘s latest film with the movie pushed back again and again, but this trailer dispelled any fears anyone may have had. A black comedy in a sci-fi setting, the trailer does a great job at quickly giving you the premise of the film while not giving too much away and providing a few memorable moments. The trailer was so good and well received, Warner Bros. pushed the movie back again, this time to a historically more successful date.

3.) Civil War
If a trailer’s job is to generate interest in the film it promotes, then this one does it in spades. Whether it’s giving tidbits of the central conflict, glimpses of the journey that Lee (Kirsten Dunst) and her team are embarking on or Jesse Plemmon‘s character asking, “What kind of Americans?”, something intriguing is going on throughout. Add the great use of the film’s score to ramp up the tension, and you have a trailer that made me buy a ticket, as I’m sure it did for many others.

2.) Alien: Romulus
The Alien: Romulus trailer dives into a chilling new chapter of science fiction horror. As we see the crew of the Romulus stumble around their ship in fear as the alien horror hunts them. The trailer promotes the claustrophobic visuals, sounds and cinematography of the original Alien movie. While the Xenomorphs are as unrelenting and terrifying as ever as they stalk their prey. The trailer blends fear, suspense, and dread into the audience as we glimpse the Xenomorphs in their many forms. The visceral sounds and scenes give fresh horror to a new generation of moviegoers, and it had me on the edge of my seat throughout. With the iconic “In space, no one can hear you scream,” I was all in on this movie.

1.) Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
I was screaming the “Furiosa!” line for months in the lead-up to the release of the film. Something about those screams at the start, the music, the bikes, and the line, “As a child, my world was forever changed; my mother was magnificent; he took it all from me.” Paired with seeing Chris Hemsworth’s makeup and on-screen bad-guy for the first time, the trailer for Furiosa was stellar. As one of my favourite and most anticipated films of the year, I never got sick of seeing the trailer, no matter how many times I saw it played in theatres.
