The next generation of Dungeons & Dragons was revealed during this morning’s Wizards Presents event. Codenamed “One D&D,” the focus is on building upon the 5th Edition of the game, only for the better, and not losing anything that players have grown to love.
This new edition of the game is planned for release in 2024, and there’s much playtesting happening right now, which players will soon be able to help partake in. There will be an update to the rules, and One D&D will expand races while keeping everything else that was working in the game in place. This new version of the game will be fully compatible with the 5th Edition of the game and any books you’ve purchased for that edition of the game.

An example of the changes and expansion to the 5th Edition is how the Tiefling will now have three areas within the Lower Plane they can choose when you’re creating the character. The ‘Infernal’ choice will be the Tiefling character everyone is used to with no changes, while the ‘Abyssal’ and ‘Chthonic’ give different spells and change things like magic resistance.
One new race for One D&D was revealed named Ardlings. They are born in the Upper Planes and, similar to Tieflings, can pick from three areas (Exalted, Heavenly, Idyllic) for different spells, resistances and character backgrounds. Ardlings also choose what animal they’ll look like and can have things like the head of a dog, head of a lion or head of an eagle.
