At the start of 2023 on What Do You Wanna Watch?, Ashley and Dylan picked 8 films and two wild card films as part of their Fantasy Movie Game Draft before adding an extra 3 films and one wild card film on an episode mid-year. With the year over, let’s see who came out on top.

The Rules

The scores for each film are based on the Rotten Tomato’s critics average rating. For every 0.1 above 6.0 a film gets, it gets one point. For every 0.1 below 6.0, it loses one point. If a movie doesn’t release in the year, it is treated as getting a 6.0, and therefore 0 points.

There are also special rules to make certain points worth more or less. If a film scores above a 8.0, every 0.1 above 8.0 is worth two points instead of one. Meanwhile, f0r every 01. below 4.0, the loss of points is only half a point.

Finally, there are bonus points based on worldwide box office ranking. If the film ranked is ranked 1 for the year worldwide, it earns 20 points. Rank 2 earns 18 points and so on through to rank 10 earning 2 points.

Any negative critic scores for the wildcard entries don’t count.

Whoever’s film picks net the most points wins.

While Ashley may seem to have comfortably won the 2nd annual WDYWW Fantasy Movie Game, this year’s competition was much closer than it seemed. If we were to go off the score just from the films picked at the start of the year, Dylan would have won 142-135 on the back of the high-scoring duo of Oppenheimer (the highest-scoring film in the game so far) and Barbie. It is his 3 mid year picks that saw him lose the contest with his tactic of picking soon-to-be-released films, amid uncertainty about future film release due to the strikes, backfired spectacularly with The Nun II, Strays and Five Nights at Freddy’s combining to lose him 29 points.

Ashley performed well with lots of solidly performing films to go with the 42 points he earned for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Delays again plagued Ashley this year, with his pick of Dune: Part 2 earning 0 after moving to 2023, while his only negative scoring film was Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania with -3 points. Interestingly, Ashley dominated Dylan in regards to critic points, with a score of 125-47 with 12 of Ashley’s 14 films having a critic rating over 6.0. Dylan meanwhile had 5 of his 14 films with a 6.0 or higher rating, but succeeded more with box office points, earning 66 out of the possible 110.

Here’s hoping the 2024 WDYWW Fantasy Movie Game is just as interesting a contest and Dylan doesn’t choke again.
