Where to watch the 2023 Oscar nominees (Australia)

Every year when the Academy Award nominations are released, it’s easy to get caught up in wanting to watch everything ahead of the show. Unfortunately, in Australia it can often be more complicated than in other countries as, often, only some of the films are easily accessible or, in some cases, they’re still in cinemas.

To make it easy for you, I’ve gathered all the information in one place—from trailers to help you decide if something’s for you, to where (and whether) you can watch it at home yet.

Here is where you can watch all the feature films nominated for an Oscar at the 2023 Academy Awards.

AFTERSUN

Aftersun will release in Australian cinemas on February 23rd, giving you a short window to watch the film ahead of the Academy Awards.

ALL THAT BREATHES

All That Breathes doesn’t have an Australian release date yet.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

All Quiet on the Western Front is available to stream exclusively on Netflix as a Netflix Original film.

ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED

Unfortunately, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed won’t arrive in Australian cinemas until March 9th, making it a bit hard to watch ahead of the awards show.

ARGENTINA, 1985

Argentina, 1985 is available to stream exclusively on Prime Video.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER

Continuing to make a lot of money, Avatar: The Way of Water is still in cinemas around the country.

BABYLON

Babylon has only recently been released in cinemas in Australia and should still be showing for a few weeks.

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

The Banshees of Inisherin was released on New Year’s Day and is still in many cinemas around the country.

BARDO, FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS

The latest film from Alejandro González Iñárritu, BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.

THE BATMAN

You can stream The Batman on Netflix and Binge, or rent it via any digital platforms you use.

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be available to stream from February 1st on Disney+.

BLONDE

As a Netflix Original, Blonde is streaming exclusively on Netflix now.

CAUSEWAY

Causeway is an Apple TV+ Original film, and you can stream it exclusively on Apple TV+ now.

CLOSE

Close is coming to Australian cinemas on February 16th, giving you enough time to watch it ahead of the awards show.

ELVIS

You can rent Elvis now on your preferred storefront, be that Apple, Google, or elsewhere.

EMPIRE OF LIGHT

Empire of Light isn’t releasing in Australian cinemas until March 3rd.

EO

EO doesn’t currently have an Australian release date.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

The most nominated film at this year’s Academy Awards, Everything Everywhere All at Once, is available to stream on either Binge or Prime Video. You can also rent it via your digital platform of choice.

THE FABELMANS

After a Boxing Day release, The Fabelmans is still in some cinemas around Australia and probably won’t hit digital before the awards show.

FIRE OF LOVE

Fire of Love is an original National Geographic documentary and is streaming exclusively on Disney+ right now.

GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY

Netflix scooped up Rian Johnson’s follow-ups to Knives Out, making Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery a Netflix Original you can stream exclusively now.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S PINOCCHIO

Although it received a limited run in cinemas to be eligible for this nomination, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS

Available as a Premium rental for now on Apple, Google and more, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris will drop to a standard rental price in the next month, but I’m not sure exactly what date that’ll be.

A HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS

A House Made of Splinters doesn’t have an Australian release date yet.

LIVING

We’ll all have to miss out on watching Living ahead of the Academy Awards this year, as it doesn’t release in Australian cinemas until March 16th.

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is currently still playing in some cinemas around the country.

NAVALNY

You can stream Navalny for free via SBS On Demand with ads or via DocPlay. The film is also available to rent via your digital platform of choice.

PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is still in most cinemas around the country.

THE QUIET GIRL

The Quiet Girl is available for rent on all digital platforms, be that Apple, Google or others.

RRR

RRR is available to stream exclusively on Netflix now.

THE SEA BEAST

You can stream The Sea Beast exclusively on Netflix as a Netflix Original film.

TÁR

Tár arrives in Australian cinemas on January 26th.

TELL IT LIKE A WOMAN

Tell It Like a Woman does not currently have an Australian release date.

TO LESLIE

Another film arriving after the Academy Awards air, To Leslie will land in Australian cinemas on March 16th.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK

You can stream Top Gun: Maverick on Binge or Paramount+. All digital services also have the film available to rent.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

Triangle of Sadness is still in a few cinemas around the country.

TURNING RED

You can stream Turning Red on Disney+ now, or it’s available as a Premium rental on all digital storefronts.

THE WHALE

The Whale will release in Australian cinemas on February 2nd.

WOMEN TALKING

Women Talking will release in Australian cinemas on February 16th.
