Conan O’Brien is set to host the 97th Academy Awards.

The news was shared and announced by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang, who spoke highly of snagging O’Brien to host his first Academy Awards show.

“We are thrilled and honoured to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” said Kramer and Yang. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of the film with his brilliant humour, his love of movies and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best — honour the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

Many rumours circulated about who would be hosting next year’s show, with Conan O’Brien nowhere to be found on those lists. Jimmy Kimmel getting a fifth year was heavily talked about, as was John Mulaney following his very well-regarded job hosting the Governors Awards earlier this year. There had also been a rumour about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman co-hosting that I wasn’t giving any credence to.
