The developers of Destiny 2 are taking a big step today with the announcement that Bungie is now a mult-game studio. This is the first new project from the studio in over ten years.
In the first trailer for Marathon, you can see the game’s unique visual style in full force alongside the playable characters in the game, which are known as “Runners.”
Marathon is a PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the planet Tau Ceti IV. In the game, players will control the cybernetic Runners solo or in crews of up to three while searching for loot, new weapons and gear.
General Manager Scott Taylor at Bungie said the following about the reveal today:
“Marathon is the start of an amazing journey for Bungie, one that is inspired by our studio’s legendary history while pushing boldly into the future. We’re taking all of the lessons that we’ve learned from more than 30 years of creating amazing worlds and innovative PvP experiences and putting them into a game that looks, sounds, and plays like nothing Bungie has ever made.”
Game Director Christopher Barrett spoke about the game being something of a reboot of Bungies original Marathon games from the 90s on the PlayStation Blog as well:
“Finding the right balance is one of the most fun parts of development! We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world. At the same time, our vision for this game is something new. It’s not a direct sequel to the originals, but something that certainly belongs in the same universe and that feels like a Bungie game. Finding those opportunities to nod to the universe’s lore, while also getting to build something different and new has been one of the best parts of developing this game so far.”
Marathon is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC with cross-save and cross-play support.
