Nintendo has announced they’re working on a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. After what seems like years of fan-casting for who could direct, write, and star in the film. We’re starting to tick off some of those boxes and won’t have to live through another fake April Fools trailer.
We don’t know which characters will be in the movie, but we’ll assume the villain will be Ganon; it’ll feature Link with Princess Zelda and work from there. We’ve tried to work out five other characters that could play a role in the upcoming film and fan-cast the whole thing.
Let us know what you think of our picks and your own when you’re done reading through the list.
Link
Igby Rigney [Dylan’s Pick]

Link is a teenager, and at 20, Igby fits into a good age for playing Link. I also believe Link should have a young, relatively plain face, which is to say, no distinguishing features. Link in the games is the player, and although he’ll surely be voiced in the film, I’d want him to have that same look that embodies someone who is at many points confused but ready for an adventure. Rigney has also had a range of roles in the last few years and is most known for his work with Mike Flanagan in several series, but predominantly as the co-star of The Midnight Club.
Charlie Plummer [Ashley’s Pick]

Let me state here that I’m not overly familiar with the Legend of Zelda franchise. So if you hate my picks, it’s probably because they’re from an outsider’s perspective. That said, Charlie Plummer seems like a good fit for Link. He’s 24 but looks younger and is best known for the teen series Looking for Alaska. He also gained acclaim for his leading role in Lean on Pete, and I enjoyed him in Spontaneous. Could definitely see him playing a quiet (but not silent) protagonist.
Princess Zelda

Hunter Schafer [Dylan’s Pick]

Most known for her work in Euphoria, Schafer is also about to co-star in The Hunger Games: The Ballard of Songbird and Snakes. She’s proven to be one of the most significant unrecognised talents in Euphoria, carrying some of the most intense scenes and character moments. She is also slightly older than Rigney, which I like for Zelda, giving her some maturity on Link.
Thomasin McKenzie [Ashley’s Pick]

A young actress whose star has been on the rise for a while, Thomasin Mckenzie certainly has the Zelda-like look. While she has drawn acclaim for her performances in Leave No Trace and Jojo Rabbit and appeared in big genre films like Old and Last Night in Solo, she hasn’t made a big blockbuster film yet. Could this be the one?
Ganon

Robert Longstreet [Dylan’s Pick]

One of the best character actors working currently, Robert Longstreet, can bring the terrifying to his delivery when needed, as well as a firm but fair touch. It’s precisely what’s required for Ganandorf, a character that should be both scary but considered intelligent, cunning and not just a mindless “I wanna take over the Hyrule Kingdom” villain.
Winston Duke [Ashley’s Pick]

From my understanding, people want Ganon to be massive. One of the few big dudes in Hollywood with acting chops and who hasn’t been overused is Winston Duke. Best known for his roles in Black Panther and the wider MCU, he was also in Jordan Peele’s Us and plays Batman in the Spotify Audio drama Batman: Unburied. If that doesn’t prove he has enough range to play this villain, I don’t know what is.
Impa

Kate Siegel [Dylans Pick]

Although often portrayed as an older lady in the games, Kate Siegel would be perfect for the younger version of the character that’s seen in The Skyward Sword. Ultimately, Impa is a caring character who takes her duties to Princess Zelda super important, which Siegel could pull off with ease.
Jessica Henwick [Ashley’s Pick]

Another of Hollywood’s rising stars, Jessica Henwick, has already featured in some of the biggest franchises with roles in Game of Thrones, Iron Fist, The Matrix Resurrections and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Having already performed a lot of fight choreography in her past work, she seems a great fit in the role of Zelda’s protector/bodyguard.
Great Fairy

Florence Pugh [Dylan’s Pick]

In the games, Great Faeries heal Link and sometimes give items and wisdom. There are a bunch of smaller faeries, but in casting the Great Fairy, we mean the large humanoid one that appears. Florence Pugh would easily be able to portray the warm, helpful nature of The Great Fairy while adding enough charm to the character that it could be more than just a healing fountain.
Brie Larson [Ashley’s Pick]

Sometimes, it is nice to help dreams come true. Brie Larson is a known Zelda fan and would surely be happy to have any part to play in a Zelda film. While she’s best known for serious roles like Room and Short Term 12 or playing the stoic Captain Marvel, she’s done her fair share of lighter work like 21 Jump Street and United States of Tara that you know she would nail this role.
Beedle

Michael Cera [Dylan’s Pick]

Beedle is a travelling merchant who always seems so scared, yet manages to cart around a ridiculous amount of stock he can sell to Link when he bumps into him at all manner of locations. I can only see Michael Cera in this role now that I’ve said it out loud.
Simon Helberg [Ashley’s Pick]

If he’d be willing to put up with the bowl haircut he rocked for 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory, then Simon Helberg would be an incredibly screen-accurate Beedle. With his sitcom background, he seems to be a perfect fit for this salesman, who would likely be a comedic relief.
Great Deku Tree

Morgan Freeman [Dylan’s Pick]

The Great Deku Tree is a wise old spirit who protects those in his shadow. I need a deep but warm voice for this role, and there’s none better than Morgan Freeman’s.
J.K. Simmons [Ashley’s Pick]

Not many actors have the acclaim of J.K. Simmons while also the resume of voice acting work to their name. While he has played his fair share of villainous or mean characters, like J Jonah Jameson Terence Fletcher in Whiplash and Omni-Man, he has also been very warm in many others like in Juno, The Legend of Korra and also in Invincible, when Omni-Man isn’t trying to murder everyone and take over the earth…
Old Man

Mark Hamill [Dylan’s Pick]

The Old Man character in Zelda games has evolved over the years to play a more prominent role in Breath of the Wild. However, to me, he’ll always be the guy who said, “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” Meeting between the mix of a more prominent supporting role able to appear several times in the film and maybe just a once-off appearance, Mark Hamill would make the most of either.
Andy Serkis [Ashley’s Pick]

I’ll admit, this pick mostly comes from a place of wanting to see Andy Serkis in more stuff, but I believe it is totally understandable, given his performance in Andor. An actor whose motion-capture performances have dwarfed his live-action performances, any chance for more Andy Serkis is one worth taking.
