In disappointing news for fans of Control, you won’t be getting a simple and free upgrade to the next-gen version of the game. Instead, PlayStation and Xbox owners of the game will have to buy the Control Ultimate Edition if they want to get the PS5/XSX version for free.
Today Remedy Games and publisher 505 Games announced that Control Ultimate Edition will launch on PC first via Steam (for the first time on that launcher) on August 27th. The Ultimate Edition of the game will contain the base game, all the free updates as well as both expansions for the game — The Foundation and the upcoming AEW expansion.

The Control Ultimate Edition will then release digitally on September 10th via the Epic Game Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One storefronts. A physical release will follow for PS4 and Xbox One later in 2020.
A digital edition of Control Ultimate Edition will be available for both PS5 and Xbox Series X holiday 2020 with physical versions of those platforms coming in 2021.
There will be a direct upgrade path for the digital editions of PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X. But those that already own Control and even, all the DLC, you will need to buy the new addition to secure your digital upgrade path. Alternatively, you can just buy the PS5 and Xbox Series X editions digitally later in 2020.
This is disappointing news and there were no direct reasons given by Remedy Games or 505 Games as to why those who have already supported the game are getting shafted here. Hopefully, there’s a legitimate reason.
Control’s AWE Expansion releases on August 27th and will see the return of Alan Wake as Remedy build their interconnect game universe.
