PAX Australia 2022 is right around the corner, and one of the must-see areas is the PAX AUS Indie Showcase. It’s here you can get hands-on with a bunch of upcoming Australian-developed games, support some local teams, and who knows? One of these very well could end up being your favourite game from the convention.
At PAX AUS 2022, you can get hands-on with six upcoming video games. Check out the full list below.
“A funny, silly and irreverent action RPG roguelike. A mix of ‘the Office’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ with a comic-like aesthetic.”
As someone who loves The Office and Castle Crashers, everything I’m seeing from Box Knight is grabbing my attention from humour, aesthetic and gameplay points of view.
“Gubbins is a friendly puzzle game where you make words with the help and hindrance of silly little pals called Gubbins. It’s kinda like solitaire x scrabble but with more friendly chaos.”
Gubbins looks like you’re playing Scrabble and have to deal with a slightly cute but annoying troll who’s flicking and playing with your letters. I love that kind of chaotic energy.
“Tempopo is a contemplative puzzle game about planning and execution, in which you restore a harmonious garden by rescuing musical flowers across sky islands.”
There are no gameplay videos available for this one yet that I could find, but it’s from WitchBeam Games, the team behind last year’s fantastic Unpacking, so there’s a pedigree to want to try this one out straight away.
“Welcome to the jumble! TopplePOP is a physics puzzle party with bendy animal acrobats on bungee cords for 1-4 players in solo, co-op & PvP. Master precision eSport skills to dominate team battles & racing leaderboards! -Or don’t! With all-ages assist-modes, bouncy couch co-op & chill zen puzzles.”
I played TopplePOP a couple of years back during 2020’s PAX Online and enjoyed its take on Tetris a lot. I’m keen to see how much the game has changed in the last few years.
“Blaze through the future in fast-paced platformer Rooftop Renegade. Speedrun challenging levels while ducking and weaving past unpredictable hazards.”
Rooftop Renegade looks like a mix between a Sonic game and something in my recent memory, OlliOlli World. The fast gameplay is sure to be something players seek, and it looks rather hectic at times as you’re being chased.
“Set in a future, post-apocalyptic Australia, Repella Fella is an interactive, branching, cinematic adventure. Shoot, stab, lie or maim your way through each problem as it presents itself. Lend a hand or chop one off, the choice is yours.”
With a fun cartoon art style and a ridiculous trailer, I think Repella Fella is a “choose your own adventure” trying to have a few laughs, which is totally okay with me.
