Earlier in the week, Wizards of the Coast announced a bunch of news during the Magic: The Gathering Showcase 2021. The event featured a lot of information about the upcoming Magic: The Gathering sets, including two significant crossovers.
Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair Drop will feature specially curated cards designed for the collectors and will feature massive crossovers with big known IP. Announced already is a crossover with Epic Games behemoth franchise Fortnite. There will also be a Street Fighter crossover, and WoC has confirmed a Chun-Li card that will use the multi-kicker keyword fittingly.
Middle-Earth comes to MTG in 2023 with several The Lord of the Rings types of products. This is a fully-fledged “Universe Beyond” set, and we’ll learn more about the cards and their eligibility in formats next year.
Before we travel to Middle-Earth, a Universe Beyond set around Warhammer 40,000. There are new cards, reprints with new art and four decks being created for this partnership in Q3 2022.
If you want a break from the virtual or figurative MTG battlefield, there’s an MTG anime releasing on Netflix in late 2022. Wizards of the Coast has also unveiled next years core MTG sets. Coming in early 2021 is Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. That set is set 2,000 years into the future since we last visited the feudal Japan location. The key artwork certainly makes it feel like there’s a cyberpunk feel. Next up is Streets of New Capenna, which is described as a place of glitz and glamour. And then, in Q3 2022, we’ll return to the plane where Magic: The Gathering all started in 1992 with Dominaria United.
At 2 AM on September 3rd, you’ll be able to tune into either the official Magic: The Gathering Twitch or Youtube channels to learn more about the upcoming standard set, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. WoC also announced the follow-up set that we’ll learn more about in October titled Innistrad: Crimson Vow.
You’ll be able to draft both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow together in a unique ‘Double Feature’ draft booster set that’ll arrive exclusively in-game store in early 2022.
That’s all of the biggest stories out of the showcase, but you can read every little detail and find out more about what’s happening soon in MTG: Arena over at magic.wizards.com
