Magic: The Gathering in 2023 sets stage for a clash with the Phyrexians, and exploring the past with a set focused on Mishra and Urza

This morning Wizards of The Coast held ‘Wizards Presents’, a showcase where they gave information on the upcoming year of Magic: The Gathering sets and releases. With the wheels in motion for one of the direst storylines in Magic history, it will play out over the next year and cultivate in a two-part finale that sounds a little bit like Avengers: Infinity War/End Game to me.

Things are kicking off later this year on September 9th, when players return to Dominaria in Dominaria United. This is the plane where the first Magic set was set when it was released in 1993 and was home to the storytelling of the Magic universe for the decade that followed. However, this is going to be the starting point for a new four-set story arc as the Dominarians are pitted against Phyrexians.

Following Dominaria United, players will flashback in time in The Brothers War in November, which takes place around the origin of Magic and Planeswalkers. The titular brothers of the set are Mishra and Urza, who will be the set’s focus and their feud that expands into a massive war.

In 2023 things start with the two-part finale of the Phrexia storyline starts with Phyrexia: All Will Be One, which apparently “horror fans will love.” In March of the Machines, things will reach all-out war as the arc nearly closes. There is, however, an epilogue set titled March of the Machines: Aftermath that will tie up any loose ends and explore how the events of this Phrexian arc have affected the great Magic universes.

After the dark and sombre tone of the previous sets, players will have a bit of fun with Wilds of Eldraine, returning to the favourite fan plane of Eldraine, which will explore classic fairy tales.

Closing out the year in Q4 2023 will be Lost Caverns of Ixalan, which is all about spelunking for buried treasure and somehow feature dinosaurs.
