Early this morning, Wizards of the Coast showed off a bunch of new things from Dungeons & Dragons to Magic: The Gathering. It was a pretty big show with reveals of both a new edition of D&D and a crossover between MtG and Doctor Who.
Dungeons & Dragons
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen
Return to Krynn in this D&D book that also has a tabletop board game you play either on its own or in tandem with your role-playing game.
Using Unreal Engine, Wizards of the Coast is working on a tool for players to use a 3D map with miniatures and dungeons. It’ll include pee-build maps but also be fully customizable.
One D&D
The biggest news regarding Dungeons & Dragons from Wizards Presents was by far the reveal of the next generation of D&D. At this time, it’s simply being referred to as One D&D, but that could change.
While the release is still some time away, with a pencilled release of 2024, playtesting has begun, and players get to take part and help shape the next generation of D&D. You can head on over to D&D Beyond right now to download the first release of playtesting material.
It was revealed that the upcoming books will have a bundle that gets you to access early on D&D Beyond while still delivering you a physical book for collectors’ purposes.
The crossovers within ‘Universe Beyond’ continue to improve, with two massive ones revealed during this morning’s event.
A Doctor Who set is releasing in 2023 that’ll feature all your favourite Doctors, monsters and companions. It will be a unique set with four commander decks, collectors boosters and Secret Lair drops.
A Lord of The Rings set was also announced, but this will be the first of the Universe Beyond releases that will be fully Modern compatible. It’s also going to be a draftable set, so there are obviously plenty of cards and mechanics here.
Over the next year, the main storyline in the MtG universe will focus on a battle with The Phyrexians. It’s something that’s been teased in the background for several sets now, but with Dominaria United in September, things are going to start to happen with the Phyrexians making their moves.
Things will continue to Brother’s War, a flashback set, and then Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machine and March of the Machine: The Aftermath.
Wizards of the Coast all revealed the following two sets following this arc, which both have a happy feeling and a colourful background to make up for this upcoming year’s dark and dire nature.
